Whereas Daston and Galison posit a rupture in the nineteenth century based
on the invention of the concept of scientific objectivity or “blind-seeing” that attempts to erase the
presence of the observer, Bender and Marrinan suggest that “the culture of diagram” is an approach to
knowledge-making which transcends the Foucaultian divide between the classical and modern ages,
linking our contemporary moment back to the mid-eighteenth century.
